What does it mean? sério

sério

The word sério means -- you guessed it -- serious.
However, the way it works next to certain verbs can make you commit serious grammatical crimes.

ser sério
I am serious. If it means:
I am (a) serious (person).
Then it can be translated as:
Eu sou sério.

levar a sério
I'm taking it seriously.
Eu estou levando a sério.

estar sério
I am serious (right now).
Eu estou sério.

You can't translate serious about as sério sobre.

I'm serious about learning Portuguese.
Eu estou levando aprender português a sério. Right.
Eu estou sério sobre aprender português. Wrong.

I'm serious about us.
Eu estou levando a gente a sério. Right.
Eu estou sério sobre nós. Wrong.

As with every expression that depends a lot on context, it's better to see many real world examples in a row, rather than try and explain all tiny grammatical details.

A good way is to see how ser sério, levar a sério, and estar sério were used during the last twenty four hours within the blogosphere.

As how estar sério returns some Spanish results but little to no Portuguese results, chances are you'd rather be looking for estou sério.
